Marine wives and marines only please.....Do you ever feel crazy when trying to answer questions or explain the
corps or traditions to someone outside of it. People from family and friends to acquaintances ask me questions or make comments about my husband being a marine and I feel stupid answering them because I know they can't understand. For example, doesn't it make you uncomfortable knowing that your husband has been trained to kill? Umm...no. Another thing I'm questioned about a lot is why we have so much marine corps decor... flags, posters, etc. (Love Sgt. Grit 
Can anyone understand it? I try to explain that it's not what he does, but who he is. I having nothing but respect and admiration for my husband, for all marines for that matter. I just haven't figured out how to explain the fact that I'm okay with him being trained to kill and not seem like a crazy person. Actually I'm glad he has been trained to do what he does. I thank God for the marine corps. I just don't know how to get that through without sounding like a monster.
Yeah, there are some things they will never understand, but that's ok. Something that we never talk about though, is that a Marine will never understand what it's like to be a Marine wife, and a Marine wife will never understand what it's like to be a Marine. It's one of those things that no matter how close you are to it, you never know until you walk in those shoes(or boots in this case) and not just for a day, you have to walk in them and know that it's who you are. In the case of a Marine, you can go 30 years and your daily routine is still affected by experiences from basic training. You also have a different and unspoken bond with your fellow marine than normal people have. It's very likely that you've saved their life at some point or vice versa, and at the very least you have put that life in their hands and asked them to do the same, and that changes things in a way you don't really understand untill it's happened in your life.
The good thing is that you don't have to explain it to everyone. I know you feel rude when you don't, and some people are a little offended by it, like you don't care enough to share, but that's ok to a degree, more people respect a Marine than like a Marine, folks that care will start to understand just a little bit on their own with time.
When people ask things like that, I like to respond with, "good question, what do you think?" I'll ask several more questions too. It let's them try and come up with the logic for themselves. I like that way because for starters, if they give you the answer, they are less likely to disagree with it, so no argument ensues, and if they give a rediculous answer you can always reply with "I'm sorry you feel that way" and once again, no argument ensues. Additionally, when you make them come up with their own answers, they tend to ask a lot less of you. They see the pattern and they still have questions, they just try to answer them for themselves before they bother asking.
But those questions can have good answers too. When they ask about the all the Marine Corps decor and such, just say that "Marines are fanatical....about being Marines"(I think that line was in "a few good men") and let um know it's a good thing, this ain't no part time job, it's a way of life, you give your all and yes, you are wecome for that.
As for the question about your husband being trained to kill, don't be offended by it, there is truth in the question as ugly as it is. Marines are, in fact, trained to kill, amongst other things. There is a real curiosity about the concept and the mentality behind that, it's not a job skill most people learn at the office. But I realize there is also sometimes an implication behind the question, like your own safety may be at risk, or that he is less human because of it. I would answer that question by saying each and every human to ever walk this earth is capable of killing, that is part of being human, I'm just glad that if the people of my nation should ever call on him to perform such an unthinkable deed, that he is trained far better than the guy who will be trying to kill him. It's a more comforting answer than "killing is my business and business is good". You can also let them know that some people kill their spouse, and those people are usually not a Marine.
