How can I reduce the "mill glaze" on new redwood, before applying a penetrating exterior stain?
I have just ripped about 36 pieces of redwood from 2x6 heart redwood, for an arbor/ trellis I will build for my climbing rose bushes.
How can I reduce the "mill glaze" on this new redwood, so that the exterior stain I will apply will penetrate further into the wood? As the wood is now, the top fibers are glossy from having been run & pressed through a mills plane. I know if I apply the stain, the wood won't "accept" much of it.
There comes to mind something called oxalic acid. Is this something that will open up the wood grain? If so, where do I find it? As it is now, I have just left the cut wood laid out flat and have been watering it in the sun.
All suggestions will be considered.

You do not say where you are so for the purposes of my answer I shall assume you're in the UK. If in North America or elsewhere then these products are available there but under a different name. You mention in your question Oxalic Acid, this is an ideal product for cleaning and restoring dirty, discoloured and weathered wood but is not suitable for removing mill glaze. You may also find Oxalic Acid in it's neat form difficult to purchase unless you are Trade - it is a poison.
There are two options for removing the mill glaze and I, as someone who runs a business specialising in cleaning and finishing decking, garden furniture etc would choose the second option.
You first option is to manually or mechanically abrade the surface with 80 grit (NOTHING FINER) abrasive paper - remember to work in the direction of the grain, dust off then wipe over the surface with methylated spirits (denatured alcohol). Abrading will open up the woods pores and wiping with meths' will degrease the surface.
Your second option is to use a product called Prepdeck from Owatrol. This should be diluted 1:4 with fresh clean water and applied to the timber either by brush, roller or garden(bug) sprayer, lightly scrubbed and allow to sit on the surface for 15 minutes. If it starts to dry apply a mist application of water to keep active. After the appropriate time rinse with copious amounts of water and whilst still wet neutralise with Net-trol also from Owatrol, diluted 1:2 with fresh clean water. Allow Net-trol to sit on surface for a minimum of 15 minutes or until wood has lightened. Rinse with copious amounts of water and allow to dry 2-3 good drying days. Apply finish.
The benefit of this option over option 1 is that it will wash out excess tannins and saps from the timber so allowing better penetration and subsequently better adhesion of the finish.
In your question you mention Redwood, there are 2 Redwoods (I'm sticking to 2 for ease), European (scandinavian) Redwood and North American Redwood. It is worth noting that if you are talking about Nth American Redwood then due to its high tannin content, Prepdeck will darken it. The use of Net-trol will lighten it back to it's original colour. In this case do not let Prepdeck sit on the surface for more than 15 minutes.
